Eurostat's provisional data reveals Bulgaria has the highest government deficit in the EU at 7.6% of GDP, followed by Hungary and Poland. Cyprus leads with a government surplus of 4.4%. Public debt in the euro area rose to 88.9% of GDP, with 17 member states seeing increases. Romania's debt-to-GDP ratio grew modestly to 60.1%. The lowest debt ratios were in Estonia and Denmark, while Greece had the highest at 143.5%.
