Romania's government deficit decreased significantly, but public debt exceeded 60% of GDP in early 2026. Eurostat data shows a decline from 7.5% to 3.6% of GDP, the largest drop in the EU. However, public debt rose to 60.1% of GDP, marking a 0.8 percentage point increase from the previous quarter. In comparison, other EU countries experienced varying changes in their debt-to-GDP ratios, with Bulgaria and Hungary having the highest deficits.
