Romania's public debt increased significantly in May 2026, reaching 1.194 trillion lei, which is 61.4% of GDP. This rise of 23 billion lei from April was influenced by both external and internal debt growth. The central government's external debt amounted to 593.117 billion lei, while local government debt was 6.83 billion lei. Internal public debt also rose to 594.1 billion lei, representing 30.5% of GDP. The majority of the total debt consists of government bonds, with a notable portion in national currency and euros.
