The railway connection between Romania and Bulgaria will be completely closed for over eight months in 2027 for modernization and electrification of the Bucharest-Giurgiu line. Passenger and freight trains will not cross the Danube Bridge from April 5 to December 13, 2027, requiring international traffic to be redirected. The project, valued at 2.108 billion lei, aims to upgrade 93.45 kilometers of railway, enhancing infrastructure, electrification, and signaling systems. The closure will significantly impact freight transport, as this route is crucial for connections to Greece and Turkey. The project is funded by the EU and aims to improve capacity and efficiency, with a planned reopening in September 2028.
