This year, wildfires have severely impacted several European countries, with 2026 being the worst year for burned areas. The EU aims to enhance its wildfire response capabilities. In 2025, there were 372,400 professional firefighters in the EU, representing 0.18% of the workforce. Germany had the highest number of firefighters, followed by France and Italy. The four largest EU economies accounted for over half of the total firefighters. Romania and Greece also had significant numbers, while Cyprus and Estonia had the least. Data from five EU countries is missing.
