Romania's budget deficit decreased significantly in the first eight months of 2026, reaching 2.89% of GDP, down from 4.51% in 2025. This improvement is attributed to a rise in revenue by 11.4%, totaling 468.1 billion lei, while expenditures increased by only 4.2%. Notably, tax revenues surged, particularly from VAT, which rose by 25.2%. Investment spending also saw a substantial increase of 25.1 billion lei, largely funded by European sources. The Finance Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining a prudent fiscal approach amid ongoing economic pressures and the need for responsible public spending decisions.
