In 2023, Romania allocated the least funds for education among European countries, according to Eurostat data. Nordic countries, Belgium, France, and Austria invested the most in education. Romania's spending was only 3% of GDP, while Sweden allocated 6.8%. Greece and Malta also lag behind but exceed 3%. Sweden leads with nearly 7% of GDP for education, followed by Finland, Denmark, and the Netherlands, each over 5%. Belgium and France also invested more than 5%. Bulgaria surpassed Romania with over 4%, while Hungary allocated nearly 4%. The EU average for education spending was 4.7% of GDP.
