Romania has the highest youth unemployment rate in the EU, with an overall unemployment rate of 6.8% in Q2 2026. Despite over 60% of the population being employed this summer, youth employment has decreased, particularly among those aged 15-24. The unemployment rate for women is slightly higher than for men, and rural areas face double the unemployment rate compared to urban areas. The employment rate for young people has steadily declined, dropping from 18.7% in Q2 2025 to 15.3% in Q2 2026. Romania also has a significant number of young people neither in employment nor education, according to Eurostat data.
