Romania has rapidly developed a significant recycling market for glass, becoming the second largest in Eastern Europe. The Garanție-Returnare system, managed by RetuRO, has transformed waste collection and recycling practices. It allows consumers to return beverage containers for a deposit refund, ensuring 100% of collected waste is recycled. This initiative has improved the quality of recyclable materials and increased business for recyclers. The program is supported by producers and retailers, making it the third largest in the EU. The shift in perception of waste as a resource marks a significant step towards sustainability in Romania.
