Romania plans to resume sheep exports by the end of the year, contingent on a national vaccination campaign starting around October 1. The head of the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority, Alexandru Bociu, expressed optimism about the timeline, stating that vaccination against sheep pox and other diseases could be completed in 30-45 days. The country currently has 1.3 million doses of free vaccine available, with a total need of about 11 million doses. Bociu emphasized that the vaccination campaign will be free for farmers and that efforts are underway to secure additional vaccines directly from producing countries. The resumption of exports is crucial for the sheep sector, which has expanded its markets in recent years, including Algeria and Morocco. The authority is also coordinating with the European Commission for potential financial support for vaccination costs.
