Romania may secure additional defense funding through the European SAFE program, as around 20 billion euros become available due to reduced financing requests from other member states. Italy and Hungary have significantly lowered their initial funding requests, freeing up funds for redistribution. The European Commission plans to launch a new funding round by the end of 2026, allowing member states to apply for additional loans for defense projects. Romania has already received an initial tranche of 2.5 billion euros from SAFE, aimed at enhancing defense capabilities. The allocation of further funds will depend on Romania's participation and project proposals.
