The Romanian economy has lost around 65,000 jobs in the past year, primarily in the private sector, leading to a rise in unemployment by approximately 51,000 individuals. An analysis by Consilium Policy Advisors Group (CPAG) indicates that while fiscal adjustments have reduced the budget deficit, they have also incurred significant economic costs. The study highlights that the loss of jobs results in a fiscal cost of at least 2.5 billion lei annually due to uncollected taxes and increased unemployment benefits. Despite a reduction in the budget deficit to 2.3% of GDP, the structure of tax increases has adversely affected economic growth. CPAG suggests that future fiscal consolidation will be challenging, advocating for better tax collection and support for productive investments instead of repeated tax hikes.
