Romania's resident population continued to decline in 2025, with immigration not offsetting the negative natural increase. By January 1, 2026, the population was 19.04 million, down by 1,800 from the previous year. The aging demographic trend worsened, with 135.9 elderly per 100 youth. Despite a net immigration increase of 102,200, the overall population still decreased due to a negative natural increase of 104,100. The number of centenarians rose by 33.1% compared to the previous year.
