Romania's public debt has surpassed 60% of GDP for the first time, raising concerns about fiscal sustainability and compliance with EU regulations. Economist Cristian Socol highlighted the implications of this increase, noting that the country will face stricter monitoring and must adhere to commitments made in the National Budgetary Structural Plan 2025-2031. The public debt rose by 158.3 billion lei in one year, averaging 434 million lei daily. This situation necessitates a report from the Ministry of Finance justifying the debt increase and proposing measures to maintain sustainability. Current measures include freezing public sector salaries and social assistance expenditures.
