Romania has requested vaccines from the EU Vaccine Bank to combat outbreaks of sheep and goat diseases. The vaccination will occur only in affected areas, but it does not guarantee that sick animals will not be slaughtered. Farmers are concerned that vaccinated animals may not be eligible for export for two years, based on EU regulations. Currently, there are 33 outbreaks of sheep and goat measles in 12 counties, while the foot-and-mouth disease has been contained. Farmers demand that their animals not be killed and that exports resume. The ANSVSA plans to administer 1.3 million vaccine doses in high-risk areas, but the future of exports remains uncertain due to existing EU restrictions on vaccinated animals.
