Romania achieved the best performance in the EU for reducing government deficit in Q1 2026, according to Eurostat data. The adjusted seasonal government deficit decreased significantly from 7.5% of GDP in Q4 2025 to 3.6% in Q1 2026, marking a decline of nearly 3.8 percentage points. In contrast, the EU's deficit fell from 3.4% to 3.1% of GDP. Bulgaria had the highest deficit at 7.6%, while Cyprus reported a government surplus of 4.4%. Additionally, public debt in the euro area rose to 88.9% of GDP, with Romania experiencing the smallest increase in debt-to-GDP ratio among member states.
