A Michelin-starred restaurant in South Korea faced heavy fines for serving a dessert containing ants, which are not approved for consumption. The owner received a fine of approximately €9,590, while the managing company was fined €6,350 for violating food safety laws. Initially sentenced to a year in prison, the owner's punishment was reduced after pleading guilty. Laboratory tests revealed the presence of heavy metals in the ants used. The owner claimed ignorance of the ban and noted that ants are used in other cuisines worldwide. The case was discovered after the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety found photos of the dessert in online reviews, revealing that the restaurant had used around 49,000 ants over four years.
