Spanish F-18 pilots stationed in Romania have responded to numerous alerts, highlighting increased Russian drone activity testing NATO's response capabilities. In their first month, they conducted 15 emergency takeoffs, including intercepting a drone that violated Romanian airspace. The pilots emphasize the importance of intercepting potential threats to prevent harm to populated areas. Recent incidents reveal vulnerabilities in detection and response, particularly with faster drones. The Spanish contingent, part of NATO's Enhanced Air Policing mission, operates from Mihail Kogălniceanu with 200 personnel and advanced aircraft, including F-18s and an A400M refueling plane.
