In communist Romania, military conscription was mandatory for all citizens, with specific exceptions. The duration of service varied over the years, starting from 18 months post-World War II, extending to 2 years in 1948, and later to 3 years in 1953. The 1972 law established compulsory military service for all Romanian citizens, regardless of gender, between the ages of 20 and 50. Certain groups, such as the mentally ill and those imprisoned, were exempt from service. After 1990, military conscription was suspended in favor of voluntary service, but current geopolitical tensions may prompt a reevaluation of this policy.
