In 2026, Spain experienced its hottest summer since records began in 1961, with an average temperature of 24.5°C. The summer also set a new record for heatwave days, totaling 61, surpassing the previous record of 41 days in 2022. Extreme temperatures were recorded as early as late May and as late as early September, with a peak of 45.7°C in El Granado on September 2. The heat led to significant wildfires, displacing thousands and burning nearly 296,000 hectares. Additionally, over 5,000 heat-related deaths were reported, marking a record since 2015. Italy also recorded its hottest summer in over 75 years, with an average temperature of 24.3°C.
