Tokyo has experienced 34 consecutive days of rain, setting a new record since 1886. The previous record was 33 days in 2019. Since August 27, 2026, the city has received 629 mm of rain, nearly three times the average for September. Residents have seen only 46.8 hours of sunshine in the past month, about 36% of the annual average. The Japan Meteorological Agency attributes the heavy rainfall to a stationary front, recent typhoons, and the El Niño effect, compounded by global warming. Rain is expected to continue until at least October 1. The excessive moisture is impacting agriculture, with reports of vegetable growth issues and landslide risks in overly wet areas.
