The global water crisis is intensifying, with the Danube reaching alarming low levels, threatening energy production and ecosystems in Romania. A report from the World Meteorological Organization highlights a significant decline in freshwater resources worldwide, with Romania experiencing extremely low Danube levels in 2026. In 2025, freshwater reserves were 42% below normal, and only a third of monitored rivers were within normal limits. The last seven years have seen the lowest number of rivers with normal flows since 1991. Climate change is causing rapid shifts between severe droughts and extreme floods, complicating water resource management. The situation has led to an energy crisis in Romania and Hungary, as the Danube is crucial for cooling nuclear reactors. Without urgent measures, the water crisis will worsen, threatening global food security and public health.
