The assessment does not include costs for 'better reconstruction' or structural improvements, which could double replacement costs. The pace of reconstruction will be crucial for economic recovery, with public and private investment needed to avoid prolonged low productivity levels. The earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, resulted in over 5,000 deaths and nearly 17,000 injuries, with infrastructure severely affected.
