Since 1990, Romania has established 2.85 million companies, but only 1.07 million remain active. In 2025, 100,744 new firms were created, marking an 8% increase from 2024. The construction sector led in new registrations, followed by transport and technology. Bucharest and Ilfov accounted for nearly 30,000 new firms. Despite a significant rise in new companies over the past decade, many have ceased operations, with a notable drop in active firms from previous years. The trend shows a shift towards individual enterprises, as the number of sole proprietorships increased significantly in early 2026.
