The Greensand project has officially begun carbon dioxide storage under a former oil platform in the North Sea, as announced by INEOS. This marks the first large-scale CO2 storage site in the EU, providing a foundation for future carbon capture projects. The initiative aims to store up to 400,000 tons of CO2 annually, with plans to increase this to between 4 and 8 million tons by 2030. The project is part of the EU's commitment to achieve a legally binding CO2 storage capacity of at least 50 million tons per year by 2030. The CO2 will primarily come from Danish biogas facilities and will be transported by ships from Esbjerg terminal.
