Online scams involving investments in stocks and cryptocurrencies have led to significant financial losses in Romania, particularly affecting older individuals. The Romanian Police identified that victims are predominantly aged between 66 and 75, with many having only secondary education. In the first half of 2026, reported losses exceeded 58 million lei, alongside millions in euros and dollars. The study revealed that 41.9% of victims were retirees, while 41.1% were employed. Scammers have shifted tactics, increasingly requesting direct money transfers instead of app installations. The analysis was based on over 1,200 reports of online fraud, highlighting the need for awareness and prevention measures.
