Europe is facing a significant decline in apple and pear production this year, with the lowest yields in a decade due to adverse weather and reduced cultivation areas. Romania's apple production is estimated at 430,000 tons, down 3% from last year. The largest producers, including Poland and France, are experiencing even steeper declines. Late frosts and heatwaves have severely impacted crops across Eastern Europe and other regions. The apple harvest is projected to be 9.49 million tons, 15.5% lower than last year. In contrast, pear production is expected to rise slightly to 1.946 million tons, although still below the ten-year average. Market conditions for pears are more favorable than for apples, with European pears becoming competitive in South America due to favorable exchange rates.
