China has announced that solar panels have become the country's primary energy source, surpassing coal for the first time. As of July, installed solar capacity reached 1,286 GW, accounting for 31.5% of total electricity production capacity. Coal capacity was slightly lower at 1,285 GW. Despite a rise in energy demand, coal production has decreased by nearly 2% in 2025, marking the first decline in six years. Meanwhile, renewable energy installations surged last year, with record additions of 315 GW of solar and 119 GW of wind power. However, growth has slowed this year due to policy changes affecting guaranteed revenues for renewable energy. China's 15th Five-Year Plan aims for 6,000 TWh of renewable energy production by 2030, with wind and solar expected to exceed 4,000 TWh.
