The Romanian Constitutional Court will revisit the President's challenge regarding the law modifying the emergency ordinance on energy sector decarbonization. The law alters the legal framework for phasing out coal and lignite energy capacities and sets conditions for new coal capacity authorizations. It introduces exceptions to the prohibition of new coal capacities and ties the withdrawal of existing capacities to the establishment of low-carbon alternatives. The President argues that the law undermines Romania's environmental obligations and lacks clarity, potentially delaying effective environmental protection measures. He emphasizes that the law must align with constitutional standards for environmental protection.
