The first public hospital in Romania was established in 1619 in Suceava by Metropolitan Anastasie Crimca. It was known as "Bolnița lui Crimca" and aimed to serve the sick and poor. The first hospital in Bucharest, Colțea, was founded later in 1704 by Mihail Cantacuzino, inspired by Italian models. Colțea has undergone several reconstructions, including after a fire in 1739, and continues to operate today.
