The Greensand project has officially begun carbon dioxide (CO2) storage under a former oil platform in the North Sea, as announced by INEOS. This marks the first large-scale CO2 storage site in the EU, providing a foundation for future carbon capture projects. Despite being costly and facing economic viability challenges, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is supported by policymakers as a solution for hard-to-decarbonize industries. The project aims to store up to 400,000 tons of CO2 annually in its initial phase, with plans to increase this to between 4 and 8 million tons by 2030. The CO2 will primarily come from Danish biogas facilities and will be transported by ships from Esbjerg. The EU has set a legal target to achieve a CO2 storage capacity of at least 50 million tons per year by 2030.
