Primul „dam removal” autorizat din România: barajul Pojarna, demolat

The removal of the Pojarna floating barrier in Nucșoara, Argeș County, was completed in late September, enhancing the continuity of the Doamna River. Supported by the Open Rivers Programme, this project reconnects over 13 kilometers of the river, benefiting biodiversity and fish migration. It is the first officially authorized project of its kind in Romania, allowing species like the grayling and indigenous trout to swim freely. The barrier, a remnant of past logging activities, hindered fish access to breeding habitats and trapped sediments. Despite initial resistance from local authorities and community members, the project aligns with existing management plans for the river. Materials from the barrier were repurposed into an art installation by Daniel Dan, commemorating the history of floating timber.
