The junta, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, has distanced itself from France and sought closer ties with Russia since a coup in July 2023. The presidential guard regained control of the airbase with Russian support, resulting in rebel casualties. The Russian ambassador confirmed that Niger requested help from the Africa Corps to quell the uprising.
