Primarul Izmirului, mutare șoc în Turcia: edilul s-a alăturat partidului lui Erdoğan, iar opoziția aduce acuzații grave
Cemil Tugay, the mayor of Izmir, has switched from the center-left CHP to President Erdoğan's AK Party, marking a significant political shift. Tugay, who won the mayoral election in 2024 with nearly 49% of the votes, becomes the first right-leaning mayor in Izmir after 27 years of leftist leadership. His decision is surprising given his previous statements against joining AK Party. Following a court ruling reinstating CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, Tugay left the CHP and remained independent for three months. Despite his switch, CHP maintains a majority in the municipal council, with 91 members compared to AK Party's 39.
