Erion Veliaj, who faces corruption charges, appeared in a video discussing his projects and promising free meals for schoolchildren. The digital avatar, explicitly marked as AI-generated, reassured residents of his commitment to this initiative. Veliaj has been in custody since November 2025 and maintains his position until the next local elections in 2027. His duties have been shared among vice mayors during his detention, but he remains the official mayor. The use of AI in Albanian politics has sparked discussions, especially with the introduction of Diella, the world's first virtual prime minister.
