The Lebanese Parliament has abolished the death penalty, becoming the first Middle Eastern country to do so in over 20 years. The law replaces capital punishment with life imprisonment for crimes committed before its enactment and aggravated life sentences for those committed afterward. Lebanon has maintained a de facto moratorium on executions since 2004. The bill faced delays but was eventually approved after being prioritized on the agenda. Justice Minister Adel Nassar emphasized that this move positions Lebanon as a regional leader in human rights, stating that imprisonment should not be seen as leniency.
