Latvian airline airBaltic has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New York due to rising fuel prices exacerbated by the Iran conflict. The company secured €350 million in financing from various creditors to support its operations during restructuring. This move marks airBaltic as the first European airline to enter bankruptcy proceedings linked to fuel cost increases, following the May bankruptcy of Spirit Airlines. The airline aims to negotiate debt restructuring while continuing to operate flights as scheduled. Financial pressures have worsened, prompting the Latvian government to provide a €30 million loan earlier this year, and other airlines are also seeking additional capital amid similar challenges.
