In July, the global food price index reached its highest level in over three years, driven by extreme weather and conflicts affecting cereal prices. The FAO reported an increase in the index to 131.1 points, up from 130.3 in June. Cereal prices rose by 3.4%, largely due to a 5.8% increase in wheat prices amid concerns over Black Sea export disruptions and drought impacts. Vegetable oil prices also increased by 2%, reaching their highest since June 2022, influenced by rising crude oil prices and biodiesel demand. Sugar prices surged by 5.6% due to weather-related concerns and higher ethanol demand in Brazil. Conversely, meat prices fell by 2.8% and dairy prices decreased by 0.7%.
