In September 2026, electricity prices in Bucharest's spot market rose by 17% compared to August, reaching an average of 927 lei/MWh. This increase follows a 26% rise in August and is nearly double the price from September 2025. The nuclear reactors at Cernavodă were offline due to low Danube water levels, impacting energy production. Solar energy covered most daytime consumption, but prices surged during evening peaks when solar generation ceased. High gas prices in Europe also contributed to the rising electricity costs. Despite these challenges, wind energy provided some relief during favorable conditions. The spot market transactions accounted for 30% of Romania's national electricity consumption, with significant trading activity noted in late September.
