Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega announced that the country will no longer hold elections, further entrenching his regime. Ortega, in power since 2007, stated this decision eliminates any opposition, although he did not provide implementation details. He emphasized that the era of opposition parties regaining power is over. The last elections in 2021 faced significant criticism due to the repression of dissent and the arrest of opponents. Ortega has strengthened his control through constitutional reforms, including appointing his wife as co-president. The UN has accused his government of creating an authoritarian state and systematic human rights violations, amidst a political crisis since 2018.
