Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has proposed the death penalty for those intentionally causing forest fires, following recent incidents that resulted in 12 deaths. He instructed the Justice Minister to draft amendments to the penal code by September 15. The death penalty would only be enforced after all legal appeals are exhausted. Although the death penalty exists in Algerian law, executions have been on hold since 1993. Currently, intentional forest fire arson can lead to up to 30 years in prison, or life imprisonment in severe cases.
