The National Administration of Penitentiaries in Romania is seeking to hire a pest control company to exterminate bedbugs, which are present in all prisons. These insects have been deemed a form of torture by the European Court of Human Rights, contributing to Romania's condemnation for inhumane prison conditions. Bedbugs feed on blood and can cause severe itching and infections. Previous attempts to eliminate them using heated air have proven ineffective, as they return with new inmates. The ANP is now working on a specification for contracting professional pest control services, including the use of special refrigerated containers to kill both bugs and their eggs.
