In 2025, direct payments by patients in Romania are projected to exceed 33 billion lei, with nearly half allocated for pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Over a third of these payments will be for outpatient services not covered by health insurance. Compared to 2023, when direct payments were 29.6 billion lei, there is a 13% increase in 2025. Private health insurance premiums have surpassed 1 billion lei for the first time, while voluntary prepayments remain low at 1.12% of total health expenditures. By the end of 2025, over 2.2 million Romanians will have private health insurance, marking a 13% increase from 2024.
