Researchers argue that current regulations fail to account for the entire CO2 footprint of electric vehicles, including emissions from electricity production and recycling. They emphasize the need for new regulations that promote environmentally friendly production methods. The study shows that electric cars produce, on average, 41% less CO2 than internal combustion vehicles, but this varies widely. The TUM president advocates for technological openness rather than a strict phase-out of combustion engines, suggesting that not all electric vehicles are equally sustainable.
