Hungary has filed a criminal complaint regarding potential fraud in the purchase of ventilators worth approximately $965 million made by the previous government during the COVID-19 pandemic. The former government, led by Viktor Orbán, acquired around 17,000 ventilators from China, which drew criticism for over-purchasing and high costs. Foreign Minister Anita Orbán stated that a ministerial investigation raised suspicions of fiduciary duty violations and significant financial losses. The investigation revealed issues with the procurement process, including the use of intermediary companies and defective ventilators. Former Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, who facilitated these purchases, has faced scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest after resigning to join a Chinese auto manufacturer.
