Two ancient Roman ships, believed to belong to Emperor Caligula, were submerged in Lake Nemi for nearly two millennia before being recovered in the 1920s. Unfortunately, they were destroyed in a fire during World War II shortly after being displayed in a museum. The recovery operation revealed advanced Roman shipbuilding techniques, including lead sheathing and complex plumbing systems. Despite previous attempts to recover the ships, it was only in 1928 that engineers successfully lowered the lake's water level to expose the vessels. The findings provided valuable insights into Roman maritime engineering.
