The Romanian FMCG market grew by 3.4% in value in the first half of 2026, with consumers becoming more price-sensitive and favoring discounts. Nearly two-thirds of Romanians expect their financial situation to worsen, leading to a shift towards mainstream price products, which accounted for 60% of market growth. Promotions represented 26.5% of purchases, while discount stores surpassed 30% market share with an 8.9% sales increase. Traditional retail continues to decline, holding 21.3% market share, and online sales grew by 27.1%, though still only 2% of the market. Penny showed the strongest growth among retailers, expanding its customer base significantly.
