A European Union naval mission led by Italy intercepted a tanker linked to Russia's 'phantom fleet' in the Mediterranean. The Toa Payoh was under EU sanctions and sailing under Cameroon’s flag. The Italian military intervened after the captain initially refused to cooperate. Inspections lasted about two hours and were supported by Greek and Polish forces. The EU has sanctioned numerous vessels associated with Russia's attempts to bypass oil export restrictions since the Ukraine invasion.
