A small fish species, Cottus gobio, is being conserved in Retezat National Park through artificial breeding and repopulation efforts due to its fragmented population. This fish serves as an indicator of water quality and plays a crucial role in the aquatic ecosystem. The conservation program includes evaluating current populations, collecting mature specimens for breeding, controlled reproduction in a lab, and releasing young fish into suitable habitats. The initiative aims to enhance the local zglăvoacă populations across five rivers in the park.
