Five doctors from San Giovanni di Dio hospital in Agrigento, Sicily, are under investigation for allegedly conducting unnecessary penile implant surgeries funded by the National Health Service. The inquiry focuses on over a hundred surgeries performed in recent years, despite such procedures typically being excluded from essential medical services. The investigation was prompted by a high number of operations and patient influx from other regions, attracted by social media promotions. Authorities have confiscated 112 medical files related to surgeries conducted between 2018 and 2024, and the investigation is ongoing.
